At the heart of our sporting system are thousands of committed volunteers who help others take part and progress in sport. We see them performing a variety of roles in many different environments, from schools, colleges and universities to sports clubs, communities, governing bodies and performance sport.
Whether you are a professional officer working in the sector, or a volunteer supporting other volunteers, this workshop series aims to increase your confidence and build your skills and knowledge in recruiting, developing and retaining volunteers in sport.

This 90 minute online workshop aims to help you better understand your organisation’s volunteer gaps and build inclusive recruitment strategies that work.
The workshop will cover:
• Benefits of volunteering: understanding people's motivations for volunteering.
• Barriers to volunteering: understanding what may prevent people from volunteering.
• Understanding need: identifying skills gaps and knowing how to attract the right people.
• Methods for advertising: understanding how to write inclusive advertisements, as well as methods and mediums to connect with a diverse range of audiences.
This 90 minute workshop aims to help you better understand how to support and develop volunteers.
The workshop will cover:
• Conducting focused conversations: identifying skills and qualities, understanding volunteer motives
• Identifying development needs: the Personal Development Planning process
• Generating feedback: consider the use of feedback and how to offer it effectively
• Designing inclusive support and development programmes: considering the must have’s, informal v formal and accessibility
This 90 minute workshop aims to help you develop inclusive volunteer retention strategies to reduce burnout and retain volunteers in sport.
The workshop will cover:
• Volunteer burnout: identifying the triggers for burnout and ways to stop it happening
• Valuing volunteers: creating an inclusive culture which celebrates volunteering and all of its benefits
• Volunteer attrition: how to implement an inclusive succession planning process
• Maximising volunteer networks: working together to retain volunteers in sport
